Volunteer FAQ

WINGS mission is to help women discover and embrace their identity in Jesus Christ while equipping the women with employment-readiness and life skills necessary to meet the challenges of life.

Due to the nature of the program and the circumstances of volunteering, WINGS asks that all classroom volunteers be 21 years old or older to volunteer. For administrative roles outside the classroom, volunteers must be 18 years old or over to volunteer.

All Volunteers should align with WINGS’ basic Statement of Faith and core values as stated on our website and other training material. Once an application has been submitted, volunteers will complete an entrance interview and orientation. Additionally for classroom roles the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s online volunteer training and background check must be completed.

This depends upon the organization and the exact volunteer requirements you need to meet. Please reach out to the WINGS team and we will be happy to discuss if your volunteering needs can be fulfilled by our organization.

While teaching experience is a plus, WINGS welcomes all newcomers to volunteer in the classroom. Each new volunteer who desires a facilitator role will receive training to teach, take attendance, run slides, distribute handouts, and more during classroom volunteering. All facilitators are given a facilitator guide with extensive notes to assist in reaching each module’s learning outcomes and even includes timing for each section.

Once you have completed the volunteer interest form, a member of the WINGS team will be in contact with you regarding the exact requirements for volunteering. Within training you will be paired with an experienced Team Leader and shadow the conduction of the class or ministry area, learning the ins and outs of classroom set-up, if applicable, best practices, and much more.

Yes. WINGS is always appreciative of our volunteers and greatly appreciate if you can volunteer at multiple locations. Different classes may require location-specific training. Consistency in volunteer service is important to our team and our participants. We ask that you commit to serving at least 75% of your scheduled time and encourage you to observe a class or two before making a commitment to one or more classrooms. Please review our Volunteer page to see what class or classes work best with your schedule.

Not all of WINGS participants are justice-involved. WINGS volunteers in several partner programs, some which are hosted by Harris County Courts, Santa Maria Hostel, Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice, Redeemed Ministries, foster care shelters, etc. Volunteers are subject to the laws and guidelines of those programs and facilities. Please visit our Volunteer page to review all classroom locations and facilities.

Yes. During training you will be partnered with another facilitator in the classroom to become acquainted with the classroom set up and facilitating expectations. While our goal is to always have at least two volunteers in each classroom, once you are a seasoned facilitator and depending on the size of the group, there may be a time when you are not be partnered with an assistant facilitator to conduct the classroom. While you may not always be guaranteed an assistant facilitator in the classroom, WINGS does ensure that classroom volunteers are not alone in a ministry location. You will have at least one facility staff member or house manager present while you serve.

The typical day in a WINGS classroom can vary with each participating location. Despite varying classrooms, WINGS has unifying standards for each classroom, keeping the classroom a welcoming environment that encourages interactive learning, helpful discussions, and growth. Each class session will consist of a check-in process for the students, a welcome section, interactive lesson plan, and distribution of classroom handouts and resources.

At minimum we ask that you commit to a full 8-module cycle. This helps us know the classes are covered, and most importantly, gives our participants the opportunity to get to know you and build trust. The best scenario is that our participants see you return and become more comfortable sharing their ideas, thoughts, and experiences with you, and you with them.

While it is great to have prior ministry experience, it is possible to volunteer with the prayer team without extensive experience. We encourage you to reach out to the WINGS team and we will be in contact about how you can best serve alongside the Prayer Coordinator and prayer team.

To be a volunteer with the administrative team, it first takes a willingness to serve and give of your time. Your role is as vital as all others, as we work together to provide various services for the women we serve and our ministry team. From our prayer team to social media coordination, handout copy coordinator, or other remote or office role, our administrative team has a variety of tasks that need to be completed. Feel free to complete the volunteer interest form and a member of the WINGS team will be in contact with you in regards to how you and your skills can best be of service within the team.
